High School Credits earned in Middle School

7th/8th grade students enrolled in a high school equivalent course in an MMSD Middle school will automatically receive high school credit for the course(s) in which they earn a passing grade of D or higher.

  • The course title and grades (for each Semester completed) will appear on the student’s high school transcript.

  • Credits earned from these courses will be applied to their total credits required for high school graduation (Board Policy 3541), but the grades earned from these courses will not be included in the calculation of your child’s cumulative high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and will not count towards the student’s minimum graduation requirements as set forth in Board Policy 3540.

  • If, for some reason, a student does not wish to have the courses, credits and grades listed on the high school transcript, they will have the option, once in high school, to consult with their high school counselor and request to have any of the high school equivalent courses taken in middle school removed from the transcript. The request for removal must take place no later than the end of the first semester of the students 9th grade year.

Types of Credit

The type of credit that a student earns will be based on the course(s) taken.

Math Credits

Successful completion of math courses, such as 8th grade Algebra, will earn high school math credit. While students will earn high school math credit, it is important to note that they will still be required to complete 3 full years of math courses during their high school experience.

World Language Credits

Successful completion of World Language courses, such as Spanish, will earn elective credit. Successful completion of 1 year of 7th grade World Language is equivalent to one semester (Semester 1) of the first year of high school World Language. Successful completion of 1 year of 8th grade World Language is equivalent to one semester (Semester 2) of the first year of high school World Language. Thus, students will earn .5 credits each year for a total of 1 credit if they successfully complete both 7th and 8th grade World Language. This World Language credit will count towards the 1.0 Humanities credit required for high school graduation from MMSD.

Credits taken outside of MMSD

Students enrolling in an MMSD high school will receive credit for high school equivalent courses taken prior to enrolling in MMSD provided that the course is indicated on an official high school transcript from the school district where courses were completed. An official transcript should be shared with the MMSD high school by the student or by the school district previously attended by the student

If you have questions about this information, please connect with your middle school counselor. If students have questions regarding their high school transcript, they should contact their high school counselor.
